Web Site Traffic and a Turkey for SEO
How can a picture of a Turkey with some guns drive traffic to a web site?
It’s a mystery well worth investigating…
Back in November, 2013, I posted a song parody “Herbert The Homicidal Turkey” for Thanksgiving. It featured the following picture of the felonious fowl:
Fast forward to today… not a day goes by that Joe’s Dump doesn’t get at least a few hits for the song.
So, what gives? Where are the hits coming from?
Well, a short Google image search later reveals that my turkey terror is also posted on:
- tumblr
- pintrest
- livejournal
- blogspot
… and more!
With that kind of net coverage, it’s natural that people would be led back to the source. It also upped my SEO on Google. Search for “turkey” and Herbert is just a scroll down. Look for “Turkey with guns” and he’s near the top… cool!
Did I plan this? No!
Didn’t have to… Here’s the take-away:
Build a better mousetrap and they’ll beat a path to your door.
Make a picture of a homicidal turkey and they’ll drive traffic to your site!

… and here’s some bonus pictures of Herbert, just in case there’s more SEO to be had 😉
P.S. Looks like any poultry works. While writing this post, I’ve been getting new hits on “The Rubber Chicken Standard” – Go figure!
